Biography of Jean-François Delcamp, classical guitarist, composer and editor
[Français] [Español] [Português] [Italiano] [Dutch] [Deutsch]
Jean-François Delcamp, French guitarist, publisher and composer, several times first prize winner in international guitar competitions (Milan, 1981 and Paris, UFAM 1981) holds the “Certificate of Aptitude for Teaching Guitar” awarded by the French Ministry of Culture.

Born in 1956 in Nice, his passion for the guitar led him to experience all aspects of the musician’s profession: conservatory student, summer academy intern, improviser, soloist or chamber musician, concert performer, assistant professor, candidate in national and international competitions, full professor, jury, organizer of concerts and music fairs, composer and music publisher.
By chance, around the age of 7, Jean-François discovered his father’s guitar, relegated to the attic of the building. At that time, he did not yet know that this musical instrument, larger than him (he held the guitar vertically, like a double bass), would accompany him throughout his life.
A few years later, at the age of nine, he began studying the guitar, self-taught. He taught himself to read music. The following year, he became a student of Madame Brio (Ida Presti’s sister), then of master Berthie Compostel, and then of masters Alberto Ponce, Alexandre Lagoya, Christian Chanel and Carel Harms.
After completing his musical studies, he won several first prizes: first at the CNR of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in 1977, in the class of Berthie Compostel, then at the CNR of Versailles, in the class of Christian Chanel. As well as in chamber music and sight-reading classes. In 1981, he won further first prizes at international guitar competitions, first in Paris at the UFAM (Union of Women Musicians) Competition, then in Milan at the 16th Concoroso internazionale di Chitarra Classica. A year earlier, in 1980, he received the Certificate of Aptitude for Teaching Guitar, awarded by the Ministry of Culture.
In September 1981, he founded the guitar class at the “Brest Metropolitan Regional Conservatory”. From 1982 to 1984, he produced and hosted a daily program on “Radio Brest Atlantique” devoted to classical music. It was at this independent radio station that he met Danièle Belbahri, a radio reporter. They married in 1984 and had two sons who loved and practiced music.
From 1990 to 1993, he was the bassist, and also guitarist and lutenist, of the progressive rock band Halloween. Yann Honoré, the excellent bassist, had just left Halloween to join Alan Stivell. He offered himself as a “temporary backup” and his application as bassist was accepted. Within Halloween, everyone must contribute to composing for the band’s concert programs. On this occasion, he composed “Viviane” for the album “Merlin.” This first composition gave him a taste for writing for the guitar.
In 1993, with Brest musicians from diverse backgrounds; jazz, classical, traditional music, he created and chaired the “ADEMA association” whose goal is to promote today’s music. From 1993 to 1997, he participated in improvised music concerts as well as the ensemble’s creations.

In 1996, with the support of the “Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Brittany”, he created “Visions”, a set of compositions for two guitars and percussion, at the “Quartz” in Brest, in the company of jazzman Jean Luc Roumier and percussionist Philippe Di Faostino. During this period, the trio recorded a CD, entitled “Vision”, which they offered to friends.
In 1997, with some fellow enthusiasts, he founded the music fair “Musiques à l’Ouest” (Music in the West) which he organized on three occasions at the “Quartz” in Brest, each bringing together hundreds of professionals and thousands of amateurs. They organized concerts for schoolchildren on Friday, then concerts for the public on Saturday and Sunday. Classical, Rock, Trad, Jazz, SACEM, luthiers, musical associations, choirs and conservatories are brought together for 3 days, breaking down the usual barriers
In 2001, he created the website “delcamp.net” whose content migrated, in 2025, to “classical-guitar-sheet-music.com”. Classical-guitar-sheet-music.com is a resource center that provides access to more than 9000 scores for classical guitar, as well as 1200 tablatures, also for classical guitar. In 2006, he opened four forums dedicated to the guitar (French, Italian, English and Spanish), led by moderators. Each forum contains thousands of scores, MP3s, PDFs and videos, which make this ensemble a gigantic resource center and a daily meeting place for classical guitarists from all over the world.
Respectful of copyright, the Delcamp forums offer guitarists, both amateur and professional, a discussion space dedicated to mutual assistance; that is to say, mutual encouragement, the reciprocal and voluntary exchange of resources and services for the benefit of all
From 2010 to 2022, he added free online courses to the forums for students who were unable to access a teacher. These courses gradually expanded and received help from volunteer teachers and tutors. This classical guitar teaching is delivered at a rate of 10 lessons per year. An end-of-year exam validates the students’ progress.
In 2012, he discovered the baroque guitar and trained on this instrument by following the teaching of Jean-Marie Poirier in Laval.
Also in 2012, he discovered sea kayaking, which became THE new passion that did him good. Kayaking took him out of his home, put him in contact with nature, and allowed him to meet people from all walks of life, with whom he formed friendships. To share his passion, Jean-François created a blog: randokayak.com. Blog on which he relates the experience of his navigations, from the beginnings to the black paddle, in order to allow his readers to navigate by proxy.
In September 2020, he retired from his guitar teaching at the “Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Brest métropole”. Thanks to his new availability, he composes and records more often.
In September 2022, his desire to learn in a group, his desire to progress, takes a new path: he becomes one of the happy students of the “Wushu school of Brest”, a school founded and directed by master RenPing Su-Goarzin. He learns the “internal” Chinese martial arts: QiGong, TaijiQuan and TuiShou. He begins to regularly practice meditation in the tree posture. His practice of musical composition and guitar is affected, his musical language becomes more fluid, more unitary and better characterized.
In 2023, he no longer has time to do martial arts (arts he practices 10 to 18 hours per week), guitar and kayaking. He remains strongly attached to music. Also, he stops practicing kayaking, a sport that has brought him a lot on several levels: health, dynamism, expanded social life, leading collective projects, balance and fulfillment. In February 2024, he organizes the very first “Delcamp International Guitar Competition” for high-level amateur guitarists.
In summary, Jean-François Delcamp is a major figure in classical guitar in France, at the same time musician, teacher, publisher and composer, recognized for his contribution to the dissemination and promotion of the guitar, as well as for his varied and accessible works.
